On my research
My research interests are organisational management and development, citizenship, cultural values and public education (or public sector).
I hope to contribute to the research conducted in developing countries, proposing a study that can be situated in different contexts. I would like to contribute to the knowledge and policymakers about the relevance of fostering critical citizens for the development of societies.
I think that the reputation and the quality of education that The University of Manchester provides undoubtedly will help me to achieve my career goals.
In the future, I would like to work at a University, a Centre of research or in an international organisation such as the UNESCO.
On choosing my PhD
I wanted to take the next step towards working in research and the natural step for me to pursue this dream was a PhD.
I chose The University of Manchester because I fell in love with the Global Development Institute. I thought – and still think – that the GDI is a leader in studies about development. Their approach to development is multidisciplinary. The environment is also very supportive and stimulating.
On my PhD highlights
All the support that you receive to develop your research: my supervisor, the environment, the training courses, the funds, etc.
“I think that here the students really matter; we are not just a number in the system.”
On my greatest challenge
Adapting to living in Manchester at the same time as adjusting to the life of studying a PhD.
On training and development
During this second semester, I will be attending a Research Methods school in Oxford, and going to some conferences.
I’ve attended some training activities regarding methodology, which were good experiences to introduce me to interesting methods techniques.
I am also currently working as a Teaching Assistant on two modules: Understanding Research Development and Understanding Mental Health (Online).
On being an international student in Manchester
My experience has been great! I am thankful for the opportunity to study at this prestigious university. I think that here the students really matter; we are not just a number in the system.
Manchester is a vibrant city. It always surprises you. Furthermore, Manchester is a cosmopolitan city where you always interact with people from different cultures. Undoubtedly, the characteristics of the city have contributed to my own research and are the best part of the experience.
As an international student, I feel very welcomed at the University. As I said, Manchester is a cosmopolitan city, and the University is cosmopolitan as well. The environment is so varied, that it’s just unique.
I joined trips organised by the International Society, and it has been a great experience! It is not expensive, and you get to know the top sights of England with other students.
On tips for future students
My recommendations are, first, to find a school where your research interests are fairly covered. Second, to be informed about the resources that they offer and the facilities. And third, a PhD is so challenging, that you need to be in a place that you like, and be able to have fun! Manchester has so much to offer that you will never get bored (and you can easily disconnect from your research when you need it).
