Why did you choose to study at The University of Manchester?

Eri Hojo

I'm from Japan and I had been working for a Japanese trade organisation for 7 years before I came to Manchester.

I found that the University of Manchester ranked high in the field of development and also has the Human Resource Development course which I really wanted to focus on. Those are the reasons why I chose The University of Manchester.

Why did you choose your particular course?

When I was a high school student, I joined a programme which organised by National Federation of UNESCO Associations in JAPAN. During the programme, I visited the Community Learning Centre(CLC) which provided vocational training such as sewing and making bags for women who do not have decent jobs. Through this experience, I discovered the importance of Human Development and I decided to focus on Human Resource Development for my Master's study.

For my Master's thesis, I analysed the current HRD policy and strategy in Indonesia to enhance creativity in the industrial sector. I proposed the recommendation for implementing an effective HRD project for both Japan and the Indonesian government. My tutor advised me on how to review literature, gather data, and analyse data. I was able to enjoy researching thanks to my tutor's support.

Where then any specific modules or lecturers who particularly inspired you?

Field trip to South Africa was the best experience during my study. The programme included vising government-related Organisations, Social Entrepreneurs, NGOs and private companies. This first-hand experience made me deepen HRD-related knowledge from different perspectives.

What is your best memory from your time at Manchester?

University offers various useful courses and lectures such as academic English, presentation skills, and GDI lecture series. I was able to acquire fundamental academic skills and broaden my knowledge of development study.

Do you have any tips or advice for current or prospective students?

Academic journey at the University of Manchester was priceless. Teachers, supervisors, and tutors are supportive and friendly. Thanks to them I was able to complete my study and be closer to my dream. I believe the University of Manchester can navigate you to your bright future.
